Scars tell a story, but sometimes, we’d rather help them fade naturally. Whether from surgery, injury, or acne scars, a nourishing Essential Oil Scar Salve can support your skin’s healing process with the power of natural ingredients.

essential oil scar salve

This DIY salve is packed with skin-loving butters, oils, and essential oils that work together to soothe, repair, and restore. Follow this step-by-step guide to make your own healing salve at home!

This salve came about because my son had a life saving surgery resulting in a fairly large scar on his arm and leg. We have been using this scar salve on him everyday for six months and have noticed wonderful healing. His doctors have mentioned how nicely the scar should fade as we continue the scar massage each day.

Why Use a Scar Salve?

At the very least, using a scar care balm can prevent the scar from becoming tight, itchy and uncomfortable. However, it can do so much more than just that. It is used to promote skin healing, reduce the appearance of scars, and nourish damaged skin. It helps by:

  • Moisturizing – Keeps the skin hydrated, which is essential for softening scar tissue.
  • Boosting Collagen Production – Ingredients like castor oil and vitamin E support new tissue growth.
  • Reducing Inflammation – Essential oils such as lavender and helichrysum help calm irritated skin.
  • Protecting the Skin – Beeswax forms a barrier that locks in moisture and shields against environmental damage.
  • Improving Skin Elasticity – Butters and oils work together to maintain smooth, supple skin.

Benefits of Each Ingredient

Each ingredient in this recipe plays a crucial role in skin healing and scar reduction:

  • Shea Butter (3 oz) – Deeply moisturizing and rich in vitamins A and E, shea butter promotes skin regeneration and helps soften scar tissue.
  • Coconut Oil (4 oz) – Has natural antibacterial properties and penetrates deeply to hydrate and improve skin elasticity.
  • Cocoa Butter (1.5 oz) – Known for its ability to fade scars and stretch marks, cocoa butter is packed with antioxidants and fatty acids that promote healing.
  • Organic Beeswax Pellets (2 oz) – Forms a protective barrier over the skin, locking in moisture and aiding in the absorption of beneficial oils.
  • Vitamin E Oil (0.5 oz) – A powerful antioxidant that helps reduce scar appearance by supporting skin cell regeneration.
  • Castor Oil (0.5 oz) – Boosts collagen production and encourages new tissue growth, making it an excellent addition for scar healing.
  • Frankincense Essential Oil (50 drops) – Helps reduce the appearance of scars and fine lines by promoting new cell growth.
  • Lavender Essential Oil (30 drops) – Soothes inflammation, speeds up wound healing, and helps fade scars.
  • Sandalwood Essential Oil (20 drops) – Moisturizes and supports skin elasticity, reducing scar texture.
  • Helichrysum Essential Oil (25 drops) – Known for its incredible skin-regenerating properties, it helps lighten scars and reduce redness.
  • Myrrh Essential Oil (20 drops) – Promotes tissue repair and soothes irritated skin, aiding in overall skin restoration.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Double boiler (or a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan of simmering water)
  • Stirring spoon or whisk
  • Measuring scale (for precise ingredient portions)
  • Small jars or tins for storage
  • Dropper for essential oils

Instructions

In a double boiler over medium heat, melt the coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter, stirring occasionally until fully combined.

Once melted, sprinkle in the beeswax pellets and stir continuously until they are completely dissolved.

Remove from heat and stir in the castor oil and vitamin E oil.

Allow the mixture to cool slightly before adding the essential oils. Stir well to distribute evenly.

Pour the mixture into storage containers and let it solidify at room temperature.

Once fully set, your scar salve is ready to use! Apply to scars daily for best results.

Why Wait to Add Essential Oils?

Essential oils are sensitive to heat, and high temperatures can break down their beneficial properties, reducing their effectiveness. By allowing the mixture to cool slightly before adding them, you preserve their healing compounds, ensuring maximum benefits for your skin.

How to Use Your Scar Salve

For best results, apply the salve to clean skin at least once or twice daily. Massage gently into scars using circular motions to encourage absorption and stimulate circulation. Over time, with consistent use, you should notice improvements in your skin’s texture and appearance.

Substitutions

Vitamin E oil is a wonderful choice for skin healing. I don’t recommend leaving that one out, but you can use jojoba oil instead of caster oil.

If your wound is fresh, tea tree oil is another great oil that you could use in the scar salve. For old scars, tea tree may not be as beneficial, but wouldn’t do any harm.

The essential oils used in this recipe are optional, but highly recommended. I combined the best essential oils for scar healing in this recipe. At a minimum, I would include lavender oil and frankincense oil.

Natural Remedies

I love to use natural remedies. There are many scar creams that you can buy already made, but making your own Essential Oil Scar Salve is a simple and rewarding way to support your skin’s healing journey. With the right combination of nourishing butters, oils, and powerful essential oils, you can create a natural remedy that promotes skin regeneration and fades scars over time. Give this recipe a try and enjoy the benefits of homemade skincare!
