Why Make Your Own?

First things first, why bother making your own laundry detergent?

Well, for starters, it’s super cost-effective. This is probably my favorite thing about making DIY laundry detergent. You can whip up a big batch for a fraction of the cost of store-bought brands.

My second favorite thing about making DIY laundry detergent is customization. You have control over what goes into it, so you can skip the harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances. You can tailor the formula to suit your needs. Got sensitive skin? No problem! You can choose gentle, natural ingredients that won’t irritate your skin or cause allergies. It’s all about making laundry day a little bit easier.

One way to make laundry day easier is by having the perfect cleaning routine. If you like checklists you might want to check out my cleaning schedule free printable!

For those who are environmentally conscious, this is a no brainer! Making your own detergent also reduces your environmental footprint. Say goodbye to all those plastic bottles from commercial detergents! By using reusable containers for your homemade mix, you’re cutting down on waste and doing your part for the planet.

Now that you’ve learn all about the benefits, let’s get down to business. I often double or triple this recipe, but here are the measurements for a small batch to try out, so you can see out how much you’ll love it! Here’s the simple recipe to make your own powder laundry detergent:

Tools you’ll need:

Large bowl for mixing

1 cup and 1/2 cup measuring cups

Spoon for mixing

Air tight storage container (This oxo one is my favorite)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of washing soda
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1 cup of epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup of Baby Oxiclean (optional, but very helpful when laundry contains lots of stains)
  • Optional-15 drops of essential oils (wild orange is a great scent)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix all of the ingredients until well combined. Try to get rid of any clumps if there are any.
  2. Store your homemade detergent in an airtight container or mason jar.

How to Use:

  • Designate a tablespoon to keep in your container.
  • Use 1-2 tablespoons of detergent per load, depending on the size and soil level of your laundry.
  • Add the detergent directly to the drum of your washing machine before adding your clothes.
  • Wash as usual, and enjoy fresh, clean laundry!

That’s all there is to it!

And there you have it! Your very own powder laundry detergent! It’s so simple to whip up and will last you a while and save you lots of money! Not only is it easy to make, but it’s also better for your wallet, your health, and even the planet. So why not give it a try?
