2 Weeks Before Thanksgiving: Lay the Groundwork
Starting early gives you plenty of time to complete the big projects, making Thanksgiving prep much easier as the holiday draws closer. Here are the key steps to kick off your Thanksgiving countdown checklist:
- Declutter Living Space and Surfaces
- The very first thing to tackle is decluttering high-traffic areas like the living room, dining area, and entryway. Removing clutter from comman areas will give your home a cleaner look and make deep cleaning easier.
- Sort out any clutter in a convenient closet or storage area where it won’t be in the way. Doing this ahead of time saves you from scrambling for space on Thanksgiving Day.
- Deep Clean Kitchen and Appliances
- Wipe down kitchen cabinets, scrub countertops, and clean appliances. This is a good time to use the self-cleaning cycle on your oven if it has one.
- Don’t forget to clean the fridge! Clearing out old items will make space for all the Thanksgiving meal ingredients.
- Get a head start on organizing your pantry. Doing so will make it easier to find everything on your Thanksgiving menu and will speed up the post-Thanksgiving cleanup.
- Deep Clean Kitchen Cabinets
- Give those kitchen cabinets a good wipe down and scrub. Sometimes we tend to overlook messes like this because we can get so accustomed to seeing it.
- Dust Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures
- Use a microfiber cloth to dust light fixtures and ceiling fans in all common areas. This step will keep your house looking fresh and ready for guests.
- Replace any burnt-out bulbs to ensure proper lighting in the dining room and guest bedrooms.
- Organize bookshelves/sofa table
- Giving the bookshelves, sofa tables, coffee tables and side tables will make your living space feel even more organized. Try to remove any unnecessary items and be sure the areas don’t look cluttered.
- Deep Clean Sofa and Chairs
- Using a upholstery cleaner or just some upholstery cleaning solution and a brush if you don’t have the machine, give your couch and chairs a good cleaning. You’ll be surprised to see the difference it will make!
1 Week Before Thanksgiving: Focus on Key Areas
With a week to go, it’s time to focus on more specific cleaning tasks in areas that will see the most use. This includes not only common areas but also spaces like the kitchen and bathrooms.
- Wipe down chairs and clean dining table
- Get to scrubbing and make those chairs shine. Chairs can easily look dingy on the top of the back of the chair where people often touch to pull out and push up the chairs. Don’t forget to clean any extra leaves for the table and any extra tables or chairs you plan to use as extra seating.
- Deep Clean Bathrooms
- Spend extra time on bathroom surfaces, especially in the guest bathroom. Scrub sinks, toilets, and showers, and replace towels and other essentials. Make sure to have spare rolls of toilet paper and trash bags easily accessible.
- Stock up on extra hand towels, soap, and tissues. These small details make a big difference for a welcoming space.
- Dust baseboards
- While most people won’t be examining your baseboards a quick wipe down won’t take too long and it could make your space appear even more tidy. Don’t forget behind the bathroom door!
- Clean under living room furniture
- Move the chairs and couches out of the way and give that area a good cleaning, vacuum or mop that area to ensure it is clean.
- Clean Windows and Mirrors in Common Areas
- Clean windows in the living room, dining area, and entryway to brighten up the space. Use a microfiber cloth with lemon juice for a streak-free shine.
- Wipe mirrors in all guest bathrooms for a spotless finish.
3-4 Days Before Thanksgiving: Get into the Details
As the big day approaches, it’s time to give each room a thorough check, paying attention to any overlooked areas. This is also a good time to set up guest spaces with an extra hand.
- Tidy the Entryway and Porch Area
- Sweep the porch, shake out door mats, and organize any clutter in the entryway to create a welcoming space.
- Make sure there’s space for coats, shoes, and bags. Adding a mat for wet or muddy shoes is a good idea.
- Wash table linens
- If you plan to use a tablecloth, napkins, placemats, or table runner, wash them to freshen them up from either being out and used or from being in storage.
- Dust and Vacuum Living Areas
- Dust shelves, picture frames, and decorative items in the living room and dining room. Use a microfiber cloth on wood surfaces and a vacuum attachment for upholstery and hard-to-reach corners.
- Freshen up the furniture in these common areas with fabric spray for a clean home feel.
- Wash bathroom towels and rugs
- Wash hand towels, any towels that will be out on the towel rack and any bathroom rugs. Also be sure you have extra hand towels on hand to switch out if you notice the bathrooms need a fresh one during the day.
- Restock Toilet Paper
- Make sure you have plenty of extra toilet paper on hand, this could also go for paper towels and trash bags as well. It’s likely you’ll need to change these out throughout Thanksgiving Day.
