Healthy Homemade Taco Seasoning

If you’ve ever flipped over a store-bought taco seasoning packet and wondered what half the ingredients even are… you’re not alone. I started making my own taco seasoning with real ingredients, and now I can’t imagine going back.

This homemade taco seasoning is simple, flavorful, and made with real pantry spices — no fillers, no anti-caking agents, and you can control the salt and heat to fit your family. It mixes up in minutes and keeps beautifully in your spice cabinet, making taco night even easier.

It’s one of those little kitchen swaps that feels small but makes a big difference in both flavor and ingredients.

And the best part? This recipe is meant to be mixed in a batch so you always have it on hand. When it’s time to cook dinner, you just scoop it out exactly like you would a packet — no measuring individual spices, no last-minute scrambling. It keeps taco night just as quick and simple, but with ingredients you feel good about using.

Why Make Your Own Taco Seasoning?

Once you start making your own seasoning blends, it’s hard to go back to the packets. Not only does homemade taste fresher, but it also lets you choose better-quality ingredients and skip unnecessary additives.

Making your own taco seasoning means:

  • No fillers, preservatives, or mystery ingredients
  • Uses common spices you likely already have
  • Can easily be made organic if you choose
  • Uses mineral-rich salt instead of refined table salt
  • Mixed ahead so dinner stays simple and quick
  • More budget-friendly than buying packets repeatedly

It truly gives you the convenience of store-bought packets with the benefits of real ingredients.

Healthy Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe (Batch Mix)

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 3 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon fine pink Himalayan salt OR Redmond Real Salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Add all spices to a small bowl or jar.
  2. Stir or shake until evenly combined.
  3. Store in an airtight container in your spice cabinet.

That’s it — your taco seasoning blend is ready whenever dinner needs to come together fast.

How Much Equals a Taco Seasoning Packet?

Most store taco seasoning packets contain about 2 tablespoons of seasoning.

– Use 2 tablespoons per pound of meat for a standard taco flavor
– Use 3 tablespoons per pound if you prefer a stronger seasoning

Add about 1/2 cup water, simmer until thickened, and your taco filling is ready.

Because this recipe is made as a big batch, you can scoop directly from the jar just like you would tear open a packet — only with ingredients you chose yourself.

This recipe makes almost 3/4 cup of seasoning. Perfect for a smaller mason jar. I like to make even larger batches by doubling or tripling this recipe! Add a mason jar shaker lid to make it even easer to use!

Why Use Pink Himalayan Salt or Redmond Real Salt?

Instead of regular table salt, this recipe uses fine pink Himalayan salt or Redmond Real Salt, which are less processed and naturally contain trace minerals.

These salts can include minerals like:

• Potassium
• Magnesium
• Calcium
• Iron

While they’re still used in small amounts, choosing mineral-rich salts instead of heavily refined table salt is a simple way to keep your pantry ingredients closer to their natural state.

They also tend to have a cleaner, more balanced flavor, which helps the seasoning taste richer without needing as much.

Making This Seasoning Even Healthier with Organic Ingredients

If you want to take this seasoning one step further, using organic spices is an easy upgrade. If you have trouble finding organic spices at your local grocery store-Azure standard is a great place to buy spices in bulk for making your seasoning blends!

Organic spices may help reduce exposure to:

• Pesticide residues
• Irradiation treatments used on some conventional spices
• Additives sometimes mixed into lower-quality spice blends

Since taco seasoning uses several spices at once, choosing organic versions can make a noticeable difference over time — especially if taco night is a regular part of your meal plan.

That said, don’t feel like you have to go organic for this to be a good choice. Even made with regular pantry spices, this blend is still far cleaner than store packets.

Ways to Use This Seasoning

Having this pre-mixed makes it easy to throw together meals without much planning.

Use it for different recipes like:

  • Ground beef tacos
  • Chicken or ground turkey tacos
  • Taco soup
  • Burrito bowls
  • Sheet pan fajitas
  • Seasoning beans or lentils
  • Sprinkled on roasted potatoes or veggies

Use your potato flake sourdough tortillas for an even more homemade taco night!

Storage Tips

Store in a small mason jar or spice jar in a cool, dark cabinet. For best flavor, use within 6–12 months.

If your family eats taco-style meals regularly, this batch usually lasts just the right amount of time before you’re ready to mix another.
