This yogurt drink is perfect for all kiddos! It’s full of probiotics, no added sugars, sweetened with dates and flavored with fruit. Kids love yogurt drinks. They are a delicious and easy snack. Unfortunately, most, if not all, of the yogurt drinks you buy at the store have added sugar, additives, and do not contain probiotics.

Is homemade yogurt healthier?

In short, yes, homemade yogurt is healthier for you. You can choose what milk it is made with. It does not contain additives or added sugars. Not to mention, it is full of gut healthy probiotics.

When making drinkable yogurt, you can use store bought plain yogurt instead of making your own yogurt. However, it’s pretty simple and much cheaper to make your own. Especially if your kiddos drink it quickly like mine to! Read how to make your own yogurt here.

Is drinking yogurt drink good for you?

Making a drinkable yogurt is such a yummy healthy treat that all kids are sure to love. It is a easy way to get kids consuming the wonderful probiotics that comes in a homemade yogurt. It has many health benefits. Mainly the probiotics that are so great for your gut health. Having a healthy gut is so important to your overall health.

What is drinkable yogurt made of?

A homemade yogurt drink is made of plain yogurt (homemade or store bought), milk (for thinning), and pureed fruit and dates.

What can I mix with plain yogurt?

You can be as creative as you would like with your flavors that you add to your yogurt. Mixed berry is a favorite around here, but whatever sounds delicious to you, give it a try!

We use frozen fruit and pitted dates to flavor and sweeten our yogurt. I typically use frozen fruit because it’s easy to keep on hand. Fresh fruit could certainly be used instead of frozen.

Dates are a great natural sweetener. They are very nutritious. and have numerous health benefits.

Are dates a better sweetener than sugar?

Dates are an excellent source of fructose. They are also high in antioxidants and fiber. Antioxidants help reduce or prevent damage caused by oxidation. Oxidation damages cell membranes. The fiber in dates can help reduce constipation. There are many health benefits to dates and you can read more about them here.

How long does homemade drinkable yogurt last?

The yogurt alone will last about 2 weeks. When you add milk, fruit and dates it will reduce its shelf life. It would be safe if consumed within a week. However, as long as there is not mold present, a foul smell or taste, we will continue to consume it past one week. Although, it doesn’t usually stay in our fridge that long because our kiddos LOVE yogurt drinks!

Tools you will need to make homemade yogurt drinks

Blender

Large container to store your yogurt (I like a half gallon mason jar with a flip top lid)

If you plan to make your yogurt, you will also need:

Instatpot with yogurt function (this is the easiest way to make homemade yogurt)

Thermometer

Ingredients

If you plan to make yours with homemade yogurt:

Milk
Frozen Fruit
Pitted dates
Small container of plain yogurt with live cultures (I use plain chobani) OR yogurt culture starter

If you plan to use store bought yogurt:

Milk
Frozen Fruit
Pitted dates
Plain yogurt

How to make homemade yogurt drinks

First, you will want to either buy or make plain yogurt. Check out my post on how to make your own yogurt with an Instatpot!

You will need almost half of a gallon of yogurt.

In your blender add about two cups of your chosen fruit (We use a berry blend of strawberry, raspberry and blueberry), a handful of pitted dates (about 10 depending on the size), and add water or an organic juice (just enough to help blend it together). Puree these together.

It’s easiest to mix the ingredients if you layer them. Add about half of your yogurt to your container. Then add half of your fruit/date puree. Add 1/2 cup of milk and mix. Add the rest of your yogurt and fruit puree. If you want it to be thinner, add more milk, if you are happy with the consistency, leave it! I love how versatile this yogurt is!

Variations for your yogurt drinks

You could add a veggie into your fruit blend. Spinach is a great option. It doesn’t have a strong flavor but is packed full of nutrients.

Instead of adding milk to thin out your yogurt you could add milk kefir for additional probiotic benefits!
